Zachary Stockill: If you’re working on overcoming intrusive thoughts, especially intrusive thoughts about your partner’s past, it can be hard to know if you’re actually getting better.
Some days feel easier. Other days feel like you’re back at square one.
But there’s one strange, overlooked sign that tells me someone is making real progress in healing retroactive jealousy.
And it might surprise you:
You start getting bored with the thoughts.
In the video below, I explain exactly what I mean:
Why Overcoming Intrusive Thoughts Feels So Messy
For those new here, retroactive jealousy refers to unwanted intrusive thoughts, obsessive curiosity, and what I call mental movies about your partner’s past relationships and/or sexual history.
And when you’re serious about overcoming intrusive thoughts, the journey rarely looks clean or linear.
It’s not a straight line upward.
It often looks like progress… then setbacks… then breakthroughs… then more setbacks.
This is normal.
Especially if you’re trying to work through it alone.
Healing often feels chaotic before it feels stable.
The Real Problem Isn’t the Thought
This is one of the most important truths about overcoming intrusive thoughts:
The thought itself is not the problem.
Your emotional reaction to the thought is what keeps it alive.
A thought about your partner’s past is just a thought.
It has no built-in meaning.
It has no built-in power.
But when you react with fear, anger, disgust, panic, or endless analysis, you send your brain a powerful signal:
This matters. This is dangerous. Keep watching this.
And that’s how the cycle gets reinforced.
Overcoming Intrusive Thoughts Means Changing Your Response
Most people assume that healing means making the thoughts disappear completely.
That’s not the goal.
The goal is changing how you respond when the thoughts appear.
You cannot always control what enters your mind.
But you can learn to control your reaction.
This is the foundation of overcoming intrusive thoughts.
Instead of spiraling, interrogating the thought, or trying to “solve” it, you learn to notice it… and let it pass.
No drama.
No panic.
No urgent need for certainty.
The Hidden Sign You’re Making Progress
So how do you know if you’re actually improving?
Ask yourself one simple question:
Am I getting bored with these thoughts?
This may sound strange, but boredom is a powerful indicator of healing.
Why?
Because boredom means the thoughts are losing emotional charge.
They’re no longer grabbing your nervous system the way they used to.
The same thought that once sent you into a spiral now feels more like:
Oh. This again.
And then you move on.
That shift is huge.
Why Boredom Means You’re Winning
Retroactive jealousy feeds on emotional energy.
When you stop feeding intrusive thoughts with intense reactions, your brain begins learning something new:
Maybe this isn’t actually important.
And when that happens, the thoughts start losing momentum.
They become:
- Less frequent
- Less intense
- Less believable
- Less disruptive
This is one of the clearest milestones in overcoming intrusive thoughts.
Not because the thoughts disappear instantly—but because they stop controlling your life.
Progress Is Not Perfection
It’s important to remember that healing isn’t about never being triggered again.
You may still have bad days.
You may still feel anxious sometimes.
You may still get pulled into old patterns occasionally.
That doesn’t mean you’re failing.
It means you’re human.
The real metric is this:
How quickly do you recover?
That’s what matters.
Final Thoughts on Overcoming Intrusive Thoughts
If you’re serious about overcoming intrusive thoughts, stop measuring progress by whether the thoughts still show up.
Measure progress by how much power they still have over you.
Are you less reactive?
Less fearful?
Less consumed?
More grounded?
And most importantly… are you getting bored?
If so, that’s a very good sign.
Boredom means your mind is loosening its grip.
And that’s often where real freedom begins.
