Retroactive Jealousy Coaching Testimonial: Mark’s Story [VIDEO]

Zachary Stockill: In today’s video, I’m sharing a conversation with one of my former clients about his experience overcoming retroactive jealousy.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by intrusive thoughts about your partner’s past—or wondered whether help is actually possible—this story may resonate with you.

What retroactive jealousy looked like before coaching

Mark first experienced retroactive jealousy several years before we worked together. At the time, the problem faded because he wasn’t in a relationship.

But when he entered a new relationship, the jealousy returned—and this time it slowly took hold of his daily life.

Like many people struggling with RJ, he found himself dealing with:

  • Constant intrusive thoughts
  • Insecurity about his partner’s past
  • Repeated questioning of his partner
  • Vivid “mental movies” about past partners

If this sounds familiar, you may also recognize the experience described in my article on intrusive thoughts about your partner’s past.

For Mark, these thoughts were relentless.

As he described it:

“First thing in the morning, last thing at night. It was always on my mind.”

The jealousy began affecting everything—his work, his hobbies, and his ability to enjoy his relationship.

The compulsions retroactive jealousy creates

Like many RJ sufferers, Mark tried to manage his anxiety by asking more questions.

Unfortunately, this only made the problem worse.

Compulsive questioning often leads to:

  • More intrusive thoughts
  • More comparison with past partners
  • More anxiety and insecurity

This is one reason many people with RJ eventually start looking for ways to stop thinking about their partner’s past.

Without the right tools, these thought loops can become extremely difficult to break.

When therapy doesn’t address retroactive jealousy

Before working with me, Mark tried traditional therapy.

While therapy helped slightly, he felt that the therapist didn’t fully understand the nature of retroactive jealousy.

This is something I hear quite often.

RJ has many similarities to obsessive thought patterns, but it’s still a very specific issue that many therapists are unfamiliar with.

Eventually, Mark ended up leaving a previous relationship because the jealousy became too overwhelming.

The turning point

Everything changed when Mark entered a serious relationship with someone he deeply loved.

At that point, he realized something important:

“I don’t want to live this way anymore.”

He knew the jealousy wasn’t just hurting him—it was hurting his partner as well.

So he decided to confront the problem directly.

After discovering my YouTube channel, he read my book and began researching testimonials from others who had overcome retroactive jealousy.

That was when he decided to invest in coaching.

The difference after coaching

Before starting coaching, Mark experienced intrusive thoughts almost constantly.

After working through the process, the difference was dramatic.

Instead of dealing with obsessive thoughts throughout the day, he now experiences them only occasionally—perhaps once or twice a week.

That shift allowed him to enjoy his relationship and his life again.

As he put it:

“The difference is amazing.”

Why having someone who understands RJ matters

One of the most powerful aspects of the process for Mark was simply being able to talk about the issue openly.

Many RJ sufferers carry intense shame about their thoughts.

But when you can discuss the issue with someone who understands it, that shame begins to dissolve.

And once the shame lifts, real progress becomes possible.

A message to anyone considering help

Mark’s message for anyone considering getting help was simple:

“Do it. We only have one life. Time goes by fast.”

Retroactive jealousy can feel overwhelming and permanent—but it doesn’t have to be.

With the right tools, support, and commitment, it is absolutely possible to regain peace of mind and enjoy your relationship again.
