Retroactive Jealousy or Wrong Relationship? How to Know [VIDEO]

In today’s video, I’m answering a question I hear all the time from people dealing with unwanted intrusive thoughts about their partner’s past:

“Am I in the wrong relationship… or is this retroactive jealousy?”

My name is Zachary Stockill and since 2013, I’ve been helping men and women from all over the world overcome retroactive jealousy and save their relationships at RetroactiveJealousy.com.

What retroactive jealousy is (quick definition)

If you’re new here, retroactive jealousy refers to unwanted intrusive thoughts, obsessive curiosity, and what I like to call “mental movies” about a partner’s past relationships and/or sexual dating history.

If you can’t stop thinking about your partner’s past, there’s a good chance you’re dealing with retroactive jealousy.

Don’t decide your relationship’s future while you’re triggered

First, a quick reality check: untangling the “right relationship vs. wrong relationship” question can get complicated. Every relationship is different. Every person is different.

But there’s one point that matters more than most:

Making a decision about the future of your relationship is almost impossible when you’re animated by retroactive jealousy.

If you’re triggered, anxious, angry, disgusted, sad, or spinning in mental movies, you’re not seeing things clearly. That’s not the moment to decide whether to break up, confront, interrogate, or “solve” the relationship with a big move.

The best clarity question to ask

How do you feel about this relationship when you’re calm and thinking clearly?

In other words:

  • How do you feel about your partner when you’re grounded and relatively peaceful?
  • How do you feel about their past when you’ve slept well and your mind is quiet?
  • Is there a “massive gulf” between your values and your partner’s values?

If, when you’re calm, you still feel committed, you still feel good about the relationship, and the values are broadly aligned, that usually suggests you’re dealing with mostly irrational retroactive jealousy.

It’s painful and distracting, but it doesn’t automatically mean you’re in the wrong relationship. It likely means you have work to do, and the work will pay off.

When RJ might be pointing to something real

On the other hand, if when you’re calm you still have serious questions about your partner’s values, your partner’s motives for being with you, or the overall suitability of the relationship, that can be a sign that retroactive jealousy is symptomatic of deeper issues.

That doesn’t mean you should blow up your relationship because you had one clear-headed day where doubts showed up.

It does mean you should pay attention over an extended period of time. Calm-state clarity is where the signal is cleanest.

Second filter: is this a “you problem” or a “them problem”?

This is a big one.

If you’ve struggled with retroactive jealousy in multiple past relationships (two of your last three, three of your last four, etc.), chances are good this is mostly a you problem.

Meaning: the next person you date, no matter what their past is like, your mind will likely find something to latch onto again.

But if you’ve had several relationships before where you didn’t struggle with retroactive jealousy (even with partners who had more “colorful” pasts), and now you’re suddenly obsessing and spiraling, that can be a clue that something about this relationship deserves a closer look.

A simple calm-state exercise to get clarity

Do this only when you’re relatively calm and clear-headed.

Write two short lists:

  1. “When I’m calm, here are the top 3 reasons this relationship is right for me.”
  2. “When I’m calm, here are the top 3 reasons this relationship may not be right for me.”

Keep it grounded. No mental movies. No punishment fantasies. Just reality.
