Zachary Stockill: In today’s video, I want to answer a very practical question:
What should you do immediately after a retroactive jealousy spiral?
If you’ve ever found yourself stuck in a loop of obsessive thoughts, mental movies, or compulsive questioning about your partner’s past, you know how dark these moments can feel.
My name is Zachary Stockill and since 2013, I’ve been helping men and women from around the world overcome retroactive jealousy and save their relationships at RetroactiveJealousy.com.

What is a retroactive jealousy spiral?
Retroactive jealousy can often cause people to spiral.
In other words, you feel stuck—trapped in a loop of intrusive thoughts about your partner’s past, asking questions, or replaying painful mental images over and over again.
For many people, these spirals can last hours. Sometimes even days.
If this is something you struggle with, you may also relate to my article on intrusive thoughts about your partner’s past.
So how do you actually get out of one of these spirals?
Step 1: Pause and breathe
This might sound simple, but it’s powerful.
When you’re anxious, your breathing becomes shallow. This sends stress signals to your brain and increases your anxiety.
So the first step is to pause.
Open your posture. Relax your body. Take slow, deep breaths.
This is one of the fastest ways to calm your nervous system and begin regaining control.
Step 2: Focus on what you can control
This step comes from Stoic philosophy.
Ask yourself:
“What do I actually have control over right now?”
You cannot control the past.
You cannot control your partner’s past experiences.
You may not even be able to control the thoughts that pop into your head.
But you can control your actions.
You can go for a walk. You can go to the gym. You can respond differently to your thoughts.
As the Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield says:
“Tend to the part of the garden you can touch.”
This shift—from helplessness to agency—is one of the most powerful ways to break a spiral.
Step 3: Do something physical
Retroactive jealousy pulls you into your head.
One of the fastest ways out is to get back into your body.
This could be:
- Going for a walk
- Doing push-ups
- Going to the gym
- Playing a sport
- Even dancing around your room
Physical movement helps regulate your nervous system and gives your brain a break from obsessive thinking.
Even 5–10 minutes can make a noticeable difference.
Step 4: Return to your purpose
This is where things start to shift more deeply.
When you’re stuck in a spiral, it’s easy to lose sight of what actually matters in your life.
So ask yourself:
- What am I working toward right now?
- What would make my life better tomorrow?
- What kind of person do I want to be?
Then take one small action in that direction.
It could be work. It could be fitness. It could be supporting your partner. It could be something creative.
Momentum creates clarity.
And often, you don’t feel better first and then act—you act first, and then you start to feel better.
You don’t have to stay stuck
Retroactive jealousy spirals can feel overwhelming, but they are temporary.
You are not stuck like this forever.
And you’re not powerless.
If you find yourself spiraling often, it’s a sign that you need better tools—not that your relationship is doomed.
If you’re struggling to stop thinking about your partner’s past, there are structured ways to break these patterns for good.
